Summary A Nursing Assistant provides technical nursing care to adult and geriatric patients according to a plan of care to adult and geriatric patients according to a plan of care established by a Registered Nurse.

The Nursing Assistant reports to the Registered Nurse who is responsible for the assigned patient’s care.

– Saturday; Various Shifts Available: Days, Evenings and Nights (Rotating Weekends and Federal Holidays) Financial Disclosure Report: Not required Responsibilities A Nursing Assistant provides technical nursing care to adult and geriatric patients according to a plan of care to adult and geriatric patients according to a plan of care established by a Registered Nurse.

The GS-5 Nursing Assistant will be proficient in performing the following duties according to approved nursing procedure: Provides for the personal care of patients including: Feeding; Oral hygiene; Shaving; Skin care; Bathing; Showers; Tub Baths; Use of bedpan or urinal; Application of external catheters/drainage bags; Bed making; Distributing nourishments; Care for patients in isolation.

Performs, reports, and records the following activities: Vital signs; Neurological vital signs; Pulses-apical, carotid, pedal; Height/Weight; Visual chemstrip and glucometer measurements; Intake and output measurements; Cleansing and retention enemas; Suppository placement (nonmedicated); Urethral catherization; Care of established colostomies and ileostomies and application of bag; Tube feedings; Sterile & non-sterile specimen collection; Range of joint motion; Elastic bandage & hose application; Hot & cold non-sterile compresses; Sterile dressing & irrigations; Initiation of deep breathing & coughing exercises; Oral & nasal suctioning; Tracheostomy tube suctioning; Oxygen therapy; Observation or IV flow rate Care of the body after death.

Provides for supportive care of patients: Admissions, discharges & transfers; Orienting patient to environment; Ambulation; Transfers from bed to chair/stretcher/wheelchair; Turning & positioning; Bed rails & bed board application; Restraint & protective device application; Mechanical lifters utilization; Transporting, escorting & errands.

Observes and reports more subtle changes/ abnormalities in patient condition.

Assists with RN with modification of treatment plans to accommodate cultural preferences, religious preferences, and changes that occur with aging.

Assists the RN in formulating nursing objectives for individual patient care.

Participates in the implementation of the care plan developed by the RN.

Supports the health care team (e.g.

RN, MD, OT) in diagnostic and therapeutic activities.

Initiates appropriate rehabilitative measures (e.g.

dangling, ambulating).

Reinforces relevant patient education activities.

Recognizes and initiates appropriate actions in urgent/emergent situation, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BLS) when appropriate.

Utilizes appropriate emergency evacuation techniques.

Basic Requirements: U.S.

citizenship.

Citizen of the United States.

(Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.) Education or Training.

One year above high school with courses related to the NA occupation.

Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a nursing assistant may also meet in full the experience requirements for a GS-3.

English Language Proficiency: NAs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section A., Paragraph 3j.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Preferred Experience: One year of experience on an inpatient unit.

CNA certification preferred.

Grade Determinations: a.

Creditable Experience Knowledge of Current Practice.

To be creditable, the experience must have required the use of knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with the current practice.

Quality of Experience.

To be creditable, nursing assistant experience must be documented on the application or resume and verified in an employment reference, or through other independent means.

Part-Time Experience.

Part-time experience as a nursing assistant is creditable according to its relationship to the full-time workweek.

For example, a nursing assistant employed 20 hours a week, or on a 1/2-time basis, would receive 1 full-time workweek of credit for each 2 weeks of service.

GS-5 (NA) (Full Performance Level) Experience.

One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignment.

In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSAs in subparagraph (c) below; OR, Education.

Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor’s degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelor’s degree; AND Demonstrated KSAs Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patients/residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital, long term care or outpatient setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse.

Ability to communicate orally with patients/residents, families, interdisciplinary team and other personnel.

This includes serving as a preceptor to new (NAs) by assisting with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing/assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting.

Ability to recognize and react to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance.

For example, recognizing need for basic life support, controlling bleeding and assisting with behavior crisis, etc.

Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity.

This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing.

Transferring patients and objects may be required.

The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures.

The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders.

The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.

Physical demands include: Heavy lifting of 45 pounds or more Moderate carrying of 15-44 pounds Straight pulling for up to 2 hours Pushing up to 4 hours Use of fingers, both hands and legs required Walking and standing for 4 hours Ability for rapid, simultaneous mental and muscular coordination Near vision correctable at 13″ to 16″ Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other eye.
